National Burn Awareness Week
2/3/2022 (Permalink)
According to the American Burn Association 47% of house fires are caused by cooking. The whole first week of February is known as National Burn Awareness Week, and it serves as a window of opportunity to share awareness and prevention tips within the community.
Below are some tips to help keep you and your family safe while cooking
- Always cook while you are wide awake
- When cooking items that take longer such as baking, broiling, boiling and roasting, make sure you do not leave the home and set a timer as a reminder so you do not forget.
- When frying use a lip to reduce oil splatter
- Always wipe down the stove top, oven and exhaust fan after each use to reduce oil build up
- Make sure handles are always facing the back of the stove when cooking
- Do not wear loose fitting clothing as these can be a fire hazard
- Keep oven mitts away from the stove tops
